Virtual PC 2007 – An evaluation

December 11, 2008

Microsoft’s Virtual PC is a marvelous piece of software. I’ve always experimented with virtual PC’s such as vmware, and Sun’s Virtual box. All these gave me a single headache, the free versions didn’t allow to run the Virtual machines in a full screen. I believe Sun’s newer version has got this problem tweaked out but then so has this kid on the block Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. With native support for full screen and features as the following:

->Ability to switch priorities between the background host system and the virtual machine as needed.screenshot1

->Ability to change machine settings while running itself such as tweaking memory allocation and allocation of virtual drives.

->Seamless integration with the host windows os and the capability to run even Linux of windows :) {oops thats what we use every vm, for he he…}

What can be improved:

->provision for virtual CPUs: this is something missing in today’s virtual machines. Some users might want to try out the 64 bit versions of software on their 32 bit machines. A provison could be done mapping the host cpu into a virtual one (a performance issue for sure but something to really think on the lines for…)

-> And a request tot the development community – don’t let your little gizmo’s tell that Windows XP sp3 is an unsupported OS and then still run on it
