The Mock Stock Coding Challenge
February 23, 2009Hey guys as promised earlier The UVCEMUG and IEEEUVCE team have come p with an open source coding challenge for you folks. You can compete either solo or teams (max size 3). Contest is open only for UVCEians. Prizes include learning materials, resources and certificates and also a chance to see your application in action for this years IMPETUS. The time line is certainly short and we’ll evaluate you on a continuous basis. So competitors are supposed to come up with their own problem statement for their ideas of MOCK STOCK software. Here’s a briefing on what exactly a problem statement is:
Problem Statement
The problem statement should be a concise description of the design problem and its context. Be sure to include only the functional requirements of the device and not components of the solution.
The aim of problem definition is:
# to clearly define the problem for the team to focus on.
# to publicize what the team is working on.
What to do:
# be sure that the problem defined is measurable and observable.
# address the questions of:
who (the user),
what (the functionality of the device),
where (the environment),
how much (the cost).
# quantify the problem with facts and numbers where possible.
What not to do:
# do not state the problem as a question.
# do no give a solution or cause of the problem in the statement.
# do not address why or how.
10 points for the first statement to be received at http://groups.google.com/group/uvcemug/ and 15 points for the best. So get to work guys.

Virtual PC 2007 – An evaluation
December 11, 2008Microsoft’s Virtual PC is a marvelous piece of software. I’ve always experimented with virtual PC’s such as vmware, and Sun’s Virtual box. All these gave me a single headache, the free versions didn’t allow to run the Virtual machines in a full screen. I believe Sun’s newer version has got this problem tweaked out but then so has this kid on the block Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. With native support for full screen and features as the following:
->Ability to switch priorities between the background host system and the virtual machine as needed.
->Ability to change machine settings while running itself such as tweaking memory allocation and allocation of virtual drives.
->Seamless integration with the host windows os and the capability to run even Linux of windows
{oops thats what we use every vm, for he he…}

What can be improved:
->provision for virtual CPUs: this is something missing in today’s virtual machines. Some users might want to try out the 64 bit versions of software on their 32 bit machines. A provison could be done mapping the host cpu into a virtual one (a performance issue for sure but something to really think on the lines for…)
-> And a request tot the development community – don’t let your little gizmo’s tell that Windows XP sp3 is an unsupported OS and then still run on it
